Review: Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus First Look

The first look review of the two budget friendly smartphones by Moto is here.

Lenovo owned brand Motorola has unveiled two budget-friendly smartphones, Motorola Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus, both the smartphones come under the entry-level segment and boast decent specifications under a competitive price tag.

Moto E4 E4 Plus

Design & Display
The Moto E4 comes with a 5.0-inch HD display with 720 x 1280 pixels while the E4 Plus is packed with a slightly bigger 5.5-inch display having a 720p display and 267 PPI pixel density. The Moto E4 have a plastic body while the Moto E4 Plus have a metal body combined with plastic. Both the smartphones share the same design and looks of the Moto G smartphone series. The two smartphones look classy and have a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button for added protection. Even though these smartphones don't share the polished and premium metal styling of the Redmi's and the Eluga Ray's out there, the Moto E series still have a fight within with a metal combined fiber body and a tech savvy design coupled with a decent price tag.

Processor and RAM
The Moto E4 is backed by a Snapdragon 425 processors with Adreno 308 GPU while the E4 Plus is powered by a mid-tier Snapdragon 427 with Adreno 308 GPU. Both the smartphones have 2GB of RAM and the Moto E4 have an internal storage of 16 GB with a microSD card option while the Moto E4 Plus having an option to choose from 16GB or 32GB internal storage along with Micro SD expandability.

We have seen budget smartphones with a powerful processor like the Snapdragon 616 Processor seen on a Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus with 3GB of RAM and the Qualcomm's Snapdragon 617 seen on Coolpad Note 5 with 4GB of RAM with similar price tag and the downside we see on the Moto E4 is that Moto is only providing Snapdragon 425 processor with 2 GB of RAM.In the case of Moto E4 Plus, the smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 427 processor which is also a downside as compared to the more powerful Snapdragon 625 octa-core 2GHz seen on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and the Snapdragon 430 Octa-core 1.4 GHz processor on the Panasonic Eluga Ray Max. Moto could have improved on the processor and RAM side with the Moto E4 and E4 Plus as there are many smartphones available with more RAM and big processors to outrun them in the competition.

Camera
The Moto E4 Plus have a 13-megapixel rear camera with f2.0, and a front facing 5-megapixel camera with flash for selfies. While the Moto E4 have an 8-megapixel f2.2 back camera with a 5-megapixel f2.2 front camera with flash. The Moto E4 only have an 8-megapixel rear camera while compared to the 13MP camera of the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus which comes with similar price tag.

Moto E4 Plus

The Moto E4 Plus shares the same rear camera specifications we see on other smartphones brands like that of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Panasonic Eluga Ray Max while with a front camera of 8MP than that of the 5MP provided with the Moto E4 Plus.

Software & Other Specifications
On the software side, both the smartphones run on Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box and with the Android O to be released soon, we hope Moto will provide an update to the Moto E series as well.

On the battery side, The Moto E4 Plus have a huge 5000mAh battery which keeps the juices of the smartphone all day while the Moto E4 have a removable 2800mAh battery. Moto E4 Plus have a bigger battery than many smartphones available in the market.

While the Moto E4 have a normal battery capacity seen on the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus while compared to the 4,000mAh of Panasonic Eluga Ray it is slight bit low, but smartphones work differently with different processors and power consumption change with respect to that.

Price and availability
As per the blog post made by Motorola, Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus will be available across countries within a month and will be available in Iron Gray and Fine Gold colors shades.

The Moto E4 will be priced at around $129.99 / €149 which comes around to INR 8500 and the Moto E4 Plus is priced around $179.99 / €199. which will be close to around 12000 INR. The pricing and color availability may change with other factors and will be only revealed when the smartphone hits the stores.

Verdict
With the announcement of the entry-level smartphones, Lenovo is looking for feature specific mobile phone buyers with the Moto E series smartphones. Since there are many budget friendly smartphones available in the market and are welcomed by many, we hope Moto E series will also have a go when the price point is considered. The Moto E4 will surely catch the eyes of the buyers who is looking for a smartphone under a price tag of 8000 INR. While its specifications may not be up to the mark of its competitors, it keeps up to the buyer who wants to taste the Moto smartphone with a low price point. While the Moto E4 Plus looks more metal and keeps up the expectations of many in the design and camera specifications, it let down in its processor and RAM. But Moto E4 Plus have other features like the fingerprint scanner, expandable storage, and other basic features to stay alive in the competition.
